My name is Perline Murko. I was diagnosed with SLE last year. My diagnosis completely changed my life in many ways other than physical; it made me realize how important family and friends are in times of crisis. I want to give back and help those who are in similar circumstances.
On Friday May 15, to celebrate World Lupus Day, I arranged a barbeque with Australian Catholic University, Strathfield campus to raise funds towards a good cause. I personally requested students to wear purple or a set of butterfly wings were provided to wear. A selfie was taken and photos were uploaded with the hastags #PutOnPurpleForLupus or #ButterfliesForLupus. This was spread awareness of the tissue disease. Many people were on board to support their awareness and kindly donated gold coins on the day.
Despite the windy weather, it was a wonderful turnout and the amount of support received was difficult to describe. I am grateful for the volunteers who helped out and the Lupus Association of NSW who had provided essentials such as brochures and balloons. I am looking forward to organizing another successful fundraiser.
